There were creeper shells which were so old that they were just a set of ribs. There were Angaria shells, which were too heavy for their size. Only very strong crabs could use these. The short and stumpy Plunk family sometimes borrowed one.

Matty also kept a supply of tiny shells for new crabs’ first shells. He stored these in a nice big empty Baler shell. He didn’t charge anything for baby shells. Matty loved the ceremony of fitting a new crab with its first shell. He was very pleased with his current stock. There were some very beautiful little pink Strombus, tiny white moon shells, delicate whelks, tough little turban shells, and the tiniest little white creepers.
